Habitat for Humanity started working in Nepal since 1997. In the eight years till 2005, Habitat for Humanity Nepal has helped 830 families to build decent homes in the districts of Kailali, Surkhet, Kaski, Chitwan and Jhapa. To increase its impact, HFH Nepal began to leverage on partnerships with non-governmental organizations, microfinance institutions, and village lending and saving groups. Driven by the overall vision of the organization, the Meaningful Life through Housing Campaign was launched in July 2011. Through the campaign, HFH Nepal aims to develop a people-driven and community-owned methodology to address the need for decent housing in a sustainable and viable way. Programs are largely focused on rural housing in eastern and western Nepal.

job description
  • Web based project management system’s bug reporting, configuring the projects’ components (maps, tables and charts) and also work on its improvement.
  • Work closely with other departments for data-driven management.
  • Manage data collection and train data entry personnel.
  • Ad-hoc map production on an as-needed basis.
  • Create, update and extract relevant geographic base data in and from OpenStreetMap.
  • Oversee reconstruction data collection by field teams and ensure data quality.
  • Install and manage tools/equipment for data collection and map production in the field (phones, tablets, GPS devices, laptops, printers).
  • Responsible for handling the surveying, mapping and data-driven management efforts of Habitat for Humanity’s reconstruction efforts in Nepal.
  • Work closely with the existing program team and other support services.
  • Since the tools and system are already defined, the GIS expert will assume cartographic and data management responsibilities including regular map production and field data-collection. Works on upgrading the system if necessary.
  • Manage district-based volunteer data collection teams and part-time interns in Kathmandu digitizing field data into OpenStreetMap.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Job Specification
  • Experience contributing to OpenStreetMap and analyzing data in GIS software.
  • Proficiency of SQL and basic relational database management.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming languages will be a plus point.
  • Strong experience working with Microsoft Office Suite, Excel in particular for data analysis and visualization.
  • Excellent oral and written English.
  • Proven ability to understand technical requirements and communicate lower level concepts in plain language.
Education description
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics Engineering, Geography, Computer Science or other related field. 
  • Master’s degree preferred, in Geospatial science, computer science or other related field
Other Specific Requirement
  • 1-2 years’ experience using GIS in a professional setting. Experience of mobile and web based GIS applications will be a plus point.
  • Experience working with open source applications like QGIS 2.6 or greater, PostgreSql, Geoserver, Mapbox, ArcGIS Online, JOSM, ODK, OMK etc.

This is a full time national staff position based in Kathmandu with up to 30% travel. The contract covers a period of 12 months and may be extended if funding and need permit.
