Senior Civil Engineer (Underground Structures)

# Key Responsibilities

• Underground Powerhouse (UGPH) Construction: Supervise the excavation, support installation (rock bolting, shotcreting), and reinforcement for the underground powerhouse cavern and transformer hall.
• Vertical Shaft & Surge Shaft Management: Oversee the specialized construction of the vertical penstock shafts and the surge shaft, including raise boring or pilot-and-slash methods and concrete lining.
• Technical Supervision: Ensure all underground excavations comply with the approved geological designs and support patterns. Monitor rock mass behavior and coordinate with geologists.
• Quality Control: Manage the precision of steel liner installation for penstocks and high-strength concrete pouring in confined underground spaces.
• Safety & Risk Management: Implement rigorous underground safety protocols, including ventilation monitoring, rockfall protection, and emergency evacuation procedures.
• Progress Tracking: Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports specifically focused on underground milestones and resource utilization.
• Contractor Coordination: Review method statements for shaft sinking and cavern excavation, ensuring contractors adhere to technical specifications and timelines.

# Qualifications & Experience

• Education: * Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (Mandatory).
• Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience specifically in the construction of hydropower components.
  • Core Expertise: Proven track record in constructing underground powerhouses, vertical shafts, and surge shafts.
• Technical Skills: * Strong knowledge of underground excavation techniques (Drill & Blast) and support systems.
  • Proficiency in reading complex structural and tunnel gallery drawings.
  • Familiarity with international standards for underground civil works.

# Required Competencies

• Problem Solving: Ability to handle unforeseen geological challenges and "squeezing ground" conditions during excavation.
• Leadership: Experience in managing site engineers and specialized underground labor crews.
• Physical Fitness: Ability to work in challenging underground environments and travel frequently between Kathmandu and the project site.
• Communication: Fluent in technical reporting and coordination between the design team and site execution team.
